SUMMARY:Rooted in Community: A Systems Approach to Strengthening Early Childhood
DESCRIPTION:Poster Session and Display\nThe Bitterroot Early Learning Network (BELN) advances early childhood outcomes in Ravalli County through a coordinated systems approach that connects programs\, families\, educators\, and community partners. By aligning efforts across sectors including education\, business\, health\, and workforce BELN works to improve access to quality child care and create a more equitable early childhood system. Key initiatives include cross-sector collaborations\, local coalition building\, and shared services such as coordinated child care access and workforce supports. These efforts address critical community needs while strengthening the stability and quality of early childhood services. Alongside systems-level work\, BELN provides holistic programming that supports the whole child and family. Through nature-based learning\, family engagement\, and provider supports\, children and caregivers build resilience\, confidence\, and meaningful connections. Together\, these strategies highlight how collaborative\, community-driven approaches can create lasting impact for children\, families\, and the broader rural community.\n This poster illustrates how community-driven leadership and cross-sector system design can create sustainable\, aligned early childhood supports that improve outcomes for children and families in rural communities. \n1. Participants will be able to describe how integrating programs\, partnerships\, and community systems improves access\, quality\, and equity in early childhood services. \n2. Participants will recognize the role of cross-sector partnerships—such as coalitions\, shared services\, and workforce initiatives—in addressing local early childhood challenges.\n3. Participants will be able to explain how holistic\, place-based programming supports children’s development and strengthens family resilience and community well-being.

SUMMARY:Stronger Together - Building Power for Child Care Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:Poster Session and Display\nAcross the country\, from New Mexico\, to Kentucky\, to New York\, exciting changes are taking place in many states' child care systems. Often\, these changes are the result of years of organizing\, advocacy\, and building power among child care providers\, early childhood professionals\, parents/caregivers\, and concerned community members. In Montana\, a growing number of early childhood professionals are connecting with each other and taking action to call on policymakers to build a child care system that works -- for communities\, ECE professionals\, parents/caregivers\, and most of all\, for children. This poster documents some of the ways that Montana Advocates for Children\, the statewide child care policy coalition\, is helping providers connect\, get organized\, and speak up\, together.\nViewers/participants will be able to:&nbsp\;\n- describe challenges related to effective child care advocacy\n- explain the importance of person-to-person connection for building collective power\n- identify ways to engage in advocacy\, locally or at the state level

SUMMARY:Uplifting Child Care & Public School Partnerships: Community-Based Solutions Designed for Families
DESCRIPTION:Poster Session and Display\nZero to Five Montana is prioritizing supports and services to grow partnerships between public schools and private child care providers in response to emerging gaps in access\, affordability\, and alignment across the system. Strengthening alignment between these two critical sectors is essential to advancing a more sustainable system that meets the needs of children\, families\, and communities across Montana. Two of Zero to Five Montana’s pilar programs\, (1) the Employer Sponsored Child Care Grants and (2) the emerging Public School & Private Program Partnership Cohort\, have supported collaborative and community-driven approaches to expanding child care capacity\, specifically in rural and frontier communities. These two programs have highlighted scalable and sustainable innovations emerging in schools\, child care programs\, and communities across the state. Through these initiatives\, we continue to advance our mission to work for our children\, for our future This poster illustrates how community-driven leadership and cross-sector system design can create sustainable\, aligned early childhood supports that improve outcomes for children and families in rural communities. \n1. SUMMARY:(Keynote) Beyond Play vs. Learning: The Spectrum of Playful Learning
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our distinguished guest speaker!\n\nWe know that children are amazing learning machines. As adults that support young children and their families in a number of capacities\, our challenge is to uncover how to harness this natural tendency to learn. In other words\, how do we teach in a way that is child-centered\, evidence-based\, and most effective for learning today and success tomorrow? And importantly\, how do we prioritize and recognize an individual’s strengths and experience so that we support children in ways that are meaningful for individuals and not one-size-fits all?\n\nResearch from the Science of Learning is zeroing in on an answer to these question. This talk will explore how learning can be maximized when we purposefully create joyful experiences that promote active (minds-on)\, engaged (not-distracted)\, and meaningful learning (connects to the child’s life) using iterative exploration (experimentation) and utilizing the power of social interaction. Playful learning\, a pedagogical approach that views play as a spectrum rather than through the false dichotomy of play vs. learning\, naturally harnesses these characteristics in a way that is effective for learning across domains – from content knowledge (e.g.\, STEM and literacy) to the development of self-regulation and beyond. By thinking about free play\, guided play\, games\, teacher-directed play\, and direct instruction as different approaches\, we can begin to explore how and when these approaches can be used to achieve desired learning outcomes. This talk will explore what is known about playful learning and discuss how this pedagogy can be leveraged across contexts (e.g.\, schools\, homes\, and communities) and ages.\n\nJennifer M. Zosh\, Ph.D.\, is a Professor of Human Development and Family Studies at The Pennsylvania State University’s Brandywine campus. As the Director of the Brandywine Child Development Lab\, she studies how infants and young children learn about the world around them. Her areas of expertise and publication include playful learning\, the impact of technology on children\, working memory\, mathematical cognition\, and language acquisition. Notably\, she was co-lead author on a recent (2015) publication in Psychological Science in the Public Interest about putting education back in educational apps through the application of research in the science of how children learn.\n\n

SUMMARY:You Can Count on Fractions
DESCRIPTION:**ECP Credit Available** \nSession Description: Building on the progression of partitioning in Grades K-2\, participants will learn approaches to conceptualizing and formalizing fraction notation in Grade 3. We will begin by applying counting skills used with whole numbers to the counting of fractions. By counting unit fractions learners develop an understanding of the role the numerator plays in a fraction. We will count together and discuss the role mathematical language plays in our understanding of fractions and see how this understanding leads to development of fraction operations without the need to teach a standard algorithm. Participants will then make and play a fraction game that supports learner development of part\, whole\, and equivalent parts in the context of fractions through use of a length model. The presenter will share how the game is used in a third-grade classroom to introduce\, reinforce\, and extend student thinking about fractions. &nbsp\;&nbsp\;\n\nIn this session participants will: \n1. Connect whole number counting to counting fractions.\n2. Understand how counting fractions develops understanding of fraction concepts and operations.\n3. Use games to model and understand fraction concepts of whole\, parts\, and equivalent parts.

SUMMARY:Leveling Up Learning: Utilizing the Spectrum of Play
DESCRIPTION:**ECP Credit Available**\n\nPlay isn't a break from learning\; it is the engine of learning. However\, many educators feel stuck between "free play" (which feels chaotic) and "direct instruction" (which feels rigid). This &nbsp\;interactive workshop bridges that gap using the Spectrum of Play framework. Participants will begin with a 15-minute deep dive into the research-backed power of playful learning\, identifying the five key characteristics that make an activity "playful": joy\, meaning\, active engagement\, iteration\, and social interaction. We will also explore the various “stops” along the spectrum of play and discus their relative strengths.\nThe core of the session is a hands-on "Pedagogical Pivot." Participants will audit one of their own existing lessons\, mapping it onto the spectrum and identifying opportunities to infuse it with greater agency and choice. By the end of the session\, educators will walk away with a redesigned\, playful lesson plan and a toolkit of strategies to move their practice toward Guided Play—the sweet spot where adult scaffolding meets child-led discovery.\n Learning Objectives\nDeconstruct the nuances between free play\, guided play\, games\, and direct instruction.Evaluate a current learning activity using the five evidence-based characteristics of playful learning: joyful\, meaningful\, actively engaging\, iterative\, and socially interactive.Synthesize pedagogical strategies to "pivot" a teacher-led activity into a guided play experience that maintains learning goals while increasing student agency.\n\n

This 101-level session introduces the University-Assisted Community School (UACS) model—a collaborative approach where higher education institutions partner with early learning and school systems to provide sustained support.\nRather than a temporary project\, this model creates a "win-win" ecosystem: universities provide expertise\, student interns\, and resources\, while early childhood and school systems gain the capacity to better serve the whole child. We’ll explore how these partnerships can help achieve goals for student and family success by leveraging the unique assets of local or regional colleges and universities.\n· &nbsp\;-The UACS Basics:&nbsp\;Understand the core principles of the University-Assisted model and how it differs from traditional school partnerships.\n· &nbsp\;-Mutual Benefits:&nbsp\;Explore how university resources can align additional resources\, expertise\, and capacity to support early learning and school systems.\n· &nbsp\;-Starting the Conversation:&nbsp\;Identify practical ways to begin identifying and engaging potential higher education partners in your community to build a more supportive fabric for our youngest learners.
